The officers of the New York Police Department have to be well-equipped to face the daily challenges of protecting a city as busy as New York. This means using the best technology available.

One electric SUV is getting integrated into the NYPD’s fleet of police vehicles, and it isn’t a Tessy. That’s right, despite the popularity of the Tesla Model Y, it isn’t the police department’s new electric vehicle of choice.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a fully-electric Blue Oval SUV that combines the aesthetics of a Mustang muscle car with the benefits of a small SUV that uses an electric powertrain system. The Mach-E is aggressive, quick, and it has the driving dynamics that the New York Police Department is looking for in a great patrol vehicle.

NYPD patrol vehicles have to be fast and agile in the event of a chase. The capabilities of a police vehicle could be the difference between life and death for some civilians. So, the New York City Police Department’s decision to use the Mach-E is no simple matter.

Is the Ford Mustang Mach-E a good SUV?

The Blue Oval’s small electric SUV is the first fully-electric vehicle from the brand. It’s followed by the Ford F-150 Lightning. The EV got plenty of attention when it first arrived in 2021. Today, it’s taking a back seat to models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Tesla Model Y, and Volkswagen ID.4.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E starts at $45,995. It makes 266 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. The base model can go from 0-60 miles per hour in 5.8 seconds. The small electric SUV’s quickest configuration can go from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds. It has 224 miles of standard driving range. The California Route 1 configuration has 312 miles of driving range. It’s a great SUV, but it has its issues as well.

Why isn’t the Mustang Mach-E the best in its segment?

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is experiencing reliability issues. Some Mach-E models were rendered immobile after batteries overheated. The small electric SUV also experienced infotainment system issues. According to InsideEVs, Consumer Reports stripped the EV of its recommendation after it had several reliability problems.

Ford’s small electric SUV doesn’t have as much driving range as some of its competitors. Models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 also offer more value for the money in the eyes of consumers. The Mustang Mach-E is one of the best in its segment, but it will need to prove itself reliable to win over more drivers.
