Watch this $70,000 Land Rover Defender flip over 6 times after a bad crash
American highways can be a dangerous place. Distracted drivers, intoxicated motorists, and fatigued truckers are just a few of the potentially lethal presences in the country’s nearly 164,000 miles of highway. However, driver safety is that much more difficult to preserve when multiple drivers make easily avoidable mistakes. A recent and crazy rollover accident involving a heavy, fast-moving Land Rover Defender is a case in point.
A driving error and a brush-in with a Mazda CX-5 sent a 2.5-ton Land Rover Defender spiraling through the air
Dash cams are useful for multiple reasons. For starters, they protect drivers from frivolous charges after a crash. But they also provide wild video evidence in the event of absolute lunacy on public roads. In this case, a dash cam captured a rollover accident wherein a Land Rover Defender soared through the air after making contact with another SUV.
In the video, a camera user watches a gray Land Rover Defender 110 cruise past a large semi-truck in the right lane of a highway. Now, this itself is a bit of a no-no. The right lane is for slower traffic and vehicles entering or exiting the highway. No, it’s not your shortcut to passing slow-moving traffic. That’s simply bad driving practice.
However, at that moment, a Mazda CX-5 attempts a double lane change between the first semi-truck and another large truck. The CX-5 clips the speeding Defender’s quarter panel, sending it careening left across the other lanes of traffic. Fortunately, the Defender doesn’t strike any other vehicles as it loses control.
Unfortunately, the contact prompted the Land Rover SUV to jump off of its wheels and rollover. It rolls over and over before hopping a divider and coming to rest in an express lane. Between the initial contact and the Defender’s resting place, it had rolled six times.
Some of the video’s commenters were quick to point out that the Land Rover Defender was in the wrong. “The right lane is not the passing lane,” one viewer responded. However, other reviewers praised the Defender’s resilience after the kinetic crash, calling it “one tough vehicle” and that the footage “played a part” in another viewer deciding to buy a Defender.
Understandably, it looks like this Land Rover Defender is out of commission. However, the luxury SUV certainly stood up to the six-rotation rollover accident well. Check out the video of the airborne SUV below!
