If I told you that a police officer “commandeered” a kid’s bicycle to chase a suspect, you’d probably think I’m referencing a comedy movie. Perhaps something in a Will Ferrell flavor with silly physical humor. However, that’s exactly what happened in Colorado when a cop took a child’s bicycle to chase a suspected felon on a stolen scooter.
You don’t often see a police officer ‘borrow’ a kid’s bicycle to chase down a perp on a scooter
A City of Lone Tree Police Department (LTPD) police officer resorted to a slightly, well, unorthodox tactic to chase down a felony suspect. The officer’s body cam footage shows him vaulting over fences. After the suspect absconds with an electric scooter, the Colorado cop grabs a small green kid’s bicycle and gives chase.
Viewers can hear the officer use his radio to report the slow-speed chase. Hilariously, a doorbell camera captured the suspect tearing past on the scooter. Shortly after, the cop sails by asking a couple “Did you see a guy on a scooter?” Fortunately, the police officer pulls up just in time for his backup to put the suspect in handcuffs.
It wasn’t just a stolen scooter, though. The suspect had three outstanding warrants for more serious crimes, including armed robbery, per the New York Post. In addition to the previous crimes, the would-be scooter thief is looking at a felony theft charge. The state of Colorado classifies felony theft as anything over $2,000 in value. As silly as it might sound, many higher-end electric scooters can cost over $3,000.
The officer’s police department applauded his unconventional tactic in a statement. “When you’re a police officer on a mission to protect your citizens, nothing is going to stand in your way, even if your squad car is not near and your suspect is speeding away on a scooter. When it comes to the men and women in blue and their vow to protect and serve, it’s not about the wheels you’re riding, but the heart and dedication behind them.”
Social media, on the other hand, was much less reverent. One social media user commented, “Imagine seeing a man on a scooter being chased by a cop [on a] kids bike lol.” Another joked about the outdoorsy and active nature of Colorado cops. “Colorado cops commandeering a bike to chase a criminal is so on brand. They just wanted to get out and ride, man.” I’ll have to take their word for it.
Another YouTube commenter posed an important question. “Did they return the bike?” One can only hope, right? Check out the body cam footage of the cop taking his chase from on foot to two tiny wheels.
