[Video] A van is spotted with a retractable license plate to avoid tolls, dividing commenters
Cars using altered, destroyed, fake, or stolen license plates to evade bridge tolls is a growing issue. Across the nation, toll rates have increased 20 to 30%, depending on the state and road, of course. A recent Lending Tree study determined Virginia to be the most expensive state for passenger cars, with an average cost of $3.27 per mile.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike is the most expensive toll in the world, costing around $112.91 for most two-axle vehicles. So, it’s no surprise that more and more drivers -who are already financially distressed – are looking for clever ways to evade tolls.
In a recent video posted by Chris’s Garage on YouTube, he reacts to a clip sent to him by a viewer. A van is driving down a highway approaching a toll booth. Before it reaches the cameras, the license plates flip to reveal a different plate. Another moment passes, and the plate disappears altogether.
“This man has probably saved thousands on tolls,” he wrote over the video.
“It takes a lot to surprise me, but this clip actually did. That’s an actual product you can buy on Amazon, too.”
The general consensus was, ‘Eff the government’
There were a few viewers who thought the driver’s use of a trick plate was wrong on principle. Others thought it was a great way to stay under the radar without harming other drivers. A lot of viewers, though, looked at it as a middle finger to the government.
“We pay tax for the roads, yet still have to pay tolls,” wrote a viewer. “The founding fathers would be proud of this man.” His comment has 2,200 thumbs up.
Another said they would have sided with those who said it was wrong until a recent incident that swayed him to the other side.
“I was neutral towards tolls until I had my truck shipped from California to Texas and the NTT charged me almost $200 in tolls,” they explained. “It was on the back of a transporter. I called them and they said you will be charged, even if you’re towed. Lesson learned. In the future, remove your plates and toll tag.”
Others said there were so many taxes to pay just to survive, that it was worth skimping on tolls.
“They literally tax your parents when you come into this world,” they wrote. “Smart van, in my opinion.”
