Safety features, reliability, and storage space are some of the most sought after items buyers want in their new vehicle purchases. But those aren’t the only things that people desire to have when they search for their dream SUV. Other minor features have an enormous impact on a buyer’s decision when they take vehicles for test drives. Having a relatively quiet cabin is a plus. Consumer Reports made a list of which ones have the quietest interior of midsize SUVs, and it might surprise you to see a Jeep on there – the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 

What vehicles made the cut?

Besides quiet interiors, Consumer Reports listed vehicles they would actually recommend to others who may be in the market for a midsize SUV. So, to find a place on their list, the sports utility vehicle would need to meet a few more requirements. 

One of them is its reliability history. The SUV needs to have a decent track record with their owners. According to the data they pulled from their reviews and surveys, the vehicles they went with on the list met that requirement. 

Another important factor was the safety features the vehicle offered, not to mention its crash test scores. Consumer Reports use safety as one of the biggest requirements when recommending a car, truck, or SUV to their readers.

The list they compiled shows that they don’t just rattle off any vehicle that has a quiet cabin area. They want ones that are reliable and safe as well. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one that made it to this list.

Why is the Jeep Grand Cherokee on the list?

It seems kind of odd that a Jeep would land on the list at all; Jeeps aren’t exactly known for being quiet. In fact, one of the desired elements a Jeep has is the chugging sound of the engine as it rolls over rough terrain. Owners want to be able to hear that. 

However, the 2020 Grand Cherokee comes from a different mold than the Jeeps we’re more familiar with. They built these SUVs for styling and performance, while others like the Wrangler go for off-roading travels and rough terrain traversing. 

The Grand Cherokee lands on the list for its luxurious side. The plush interior keeps the wind, engine, and road noise out pretty well with the design of its cabin. 

You can find an average reliability history with the Grand Cherokee, receiving a three-out-of-five score. Its predicted ownership satisfaction rating received a four-out-of-five score, which is pretty good for the Jeep brand. 

Is it the perfect choice for a midsize SUV?

The Grand Cherokee isn’t bad, but it has its shortcomings. Fuel economy ratings are not very good when you compare it to competitor SUVs. It’s only rated to get 24 mpg on the highway, while others can go upwards in the 30 mpg range.

When it comes to safety, the Grand Cherokee leaves a little to be desired. Standard safety features for the Cherokee includes only the blind spot warning. All the other useful features, like automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning, are optional. 

When the IIHS crash-tested the Cherokee, they gave it a score of “Good” for all tests except the driver’s side and the passenger-side small overlap tests. The driver’s side received a “Marginal” rating, while the small overlap test got a “Poor” score. 

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a good choice for a midsize SUV, and it’s definitely a plus that the noise levels are next to nothing in it. So, if you’re looking for a decent, reliable vehicle, that’s quiet, you can’t go wrong purchasing this Jeep.
