Texas influencer slammed for triple-digit speed joyrides disguised as test drives
A man posting as a customer is making luxury and sports car salesman at dealerships across Texas feel like hostages. He expresses interest in a high-powered car, like Corvettes, Ferraris, Mercedes, and BMW, asks for a test drive, and puts the pedal to the metal.
Multiple salesmen recall similar stories: he’d deviate from the normal test drive route, ignore their questions or commands to return to the route, and travel at speed over 100 mph. As if it wasn’t already terrifying, the man would record the entire test drive to upload to social media.
The man took Edgar Lopez, a salesman at a Brandon Tomas dealership, on a two-and-a-half “test drive.”
“I started to get very concerned,” he told CBS. “Because any time I would tell him to get off the road or anything like that, he would just ignore me.”
Tomes, the dealership owner, said the same “customer” terrorized sales staff at another dealership of his. After seeing multiple videos online of the triple-digit joyrides, he became concerned.
“Not only do they have a very expensive piece of equipment that they could damage,” he said. “But the risk out there for hurting themselves, the person trapped in the car with them, hurting another family that’s on the road… It’s absolutely wild, and we need to put a stop to it.”
Once identified, the dealership association issued a statewide warning
Dealership owners and sales staff across the state narrowed the instances to one man, Ahmer Saeed. He posted many of the videos with captions full of racial slurs or demeaning statements about the staff.
“He gets on the test drive with the salesman and immediately starts spinning the tires, and it looks like he was going 100, 120 miles an hour and the salesman was pretty scared,” said Matt Ducote, general manager of Mortiz Kia.
The Texas Automobile Dealers Association reviewed Saeed’s profile and then issued a statewide warning to prevent him from test-driving vehicles.
Saeed stopped uploading recent videos of test drives but posted a video after receiving threats of legal action. In the video, he said he never damaged any vehicles or harmed the staff. Dealership owners and staff feel frustrated, as it shows Saeed is playing a game.
“It’s very angering that he sees this as a game,” said Lopez. “He sees people’s lives as a game.”
Viewers were upset with the influencer
Those who watched CBS’s video on YouTube of the story were equally as furious with Saeed.
One said if test drives aren’t available for anyone in Texas, they know where to place the blame.
“So, when car dealers stop allowing test drives, you have this guy to thank,” they wrote.
Someone else argued Saeed should face more serious charges if he’s ever caught.
“Not cool. Reckless endangerment and kidnapping, how terrifying,” they said.
Another mentioned that social media videos should be used as evidence against him.
“A well-known car owner in Amarillo was caught and they used one of his social media videos to arrest him,” they wrote. “And that was his own car. And yes, your videos are all the proof law enforcement needs. You ruined how many tires, taken brand new vehicles with no even break-in miles over 150 mph, you could be liable for damages.”
