Seattle man removes Tesla badges for other owners, compares it to burning a flag
The nationwide protests against Elon Musk‘s involvement in the government and Nazi-like gestures are becoming more intense. The FBI now has a task force to investigate incidents and track down those responsible following 80 reported attacks.
Trump called vandals “domestic terrorists” and suggested online that he wants to send three caught vandals to an El Salvadorian prison.
Therefore, Tesla owners are concerned for their safety. Stickers that read things like, “I bought this before Elon went crazy,” or “I know, but it’s paid off,” are growing in popularity.
Jordan Schwartz in Lynwood, Washington, is showing his allegiance to democracy in another way: removing the Tesla badges from his car. He says it removes the association of a company that doesn’t align with his views, giving him a sense of freedom.
“It’s symbolic, but I think symbols matter,” he told KING. “It’s tearing down a flag. It’s raising a flag… It gives me great satisfaction.”
Other Tesla owners asked him to do it to their EVs
Schwartz’s method is ingenious, as it doesn’t destroy the paint. He uses a heat gun to warm up the adhesive beneath the badge, then uses fishing line to get underneath the “T”. He gently maneuvers the line, separating the glue from the vehicle’s paint to remove the badge.
Then he uses a polisher to remove the access from the paint, and seals it back up with wax.
Others have asked him to remove their badges, too, to symbolize their separation from the company.
Schwartz told the outlet his decision to remove the badge came from his not wanting to sell the EV. Others he knows have, but he likes the EV, despite his disapproval of Musk. By removing the badge, he feels like he’s separating the product from the CEO.
He refuses to appease either side of the argument
By selling his EV, he’d be giving in to aggressors on the left who may vandalize his Tesla because of their hatred for Musk. By keeping the badge on the EV, he believes far-right Trump supporters might think he’s on their side.
Removing the badge shows he doesn’t stand on either side of the fence.
“I won’t be cowed by Nazis or people on the left,” he said, referring to the mounting pressure to sell his Tesla. “I am doing this because I want to make a statement about my ideology. Not out of fear.”
