The Tesla Model 3 ties a Japanese pickup truck for the most American-made vehicle on the market
American-made. It’s a concept that appeals to many car-buyers. But you won’t find the Ford F-150 or Chevrolet Silverado at the top of the list of the most American-made vehicles. Instead, the NHTSA says you’ll find the baby Tesla, the Model 3, at the top alongside the Honda Ridgeline with well over 70% American-made parts.
The NHTSA says the Tesla Model 3 includes 75% American-made parts, tying it with the Honda Ridgeline
Tesla is a frequent presence in the headlines as of late. Unfortunately for the electric automaker, it’s been mostly bad news centering around the brand’s eccentric CEO, Elon Musk. However, the marque’s most affordable car, the Model 3, earned bragging rights beyond the controversy, namely being tied for the vehicles with the most North American-made parts.
According to the NHTSA, the Tesla Model 3 is made of 75% North American parts. Not every Model 3, either. The Model 3 Long Range RWD and AWD are the only ones with the magic number. The value drops to 70% for the launch-happy Model 3 Performance. Both the Long Range and the Performance trims include 20% parts sourced from Mexico.
As for other Tesla vehicles in the lineup, the Model Y Long Range isn’t far behind at 70% North American parts, 25% of which come from Mexico. The Tesla Model S, the brand’s original luxury EV sedan, is 65% North American-made. At the back of the lineup, the Model X is comprised of 60% North American parts. Like the Model Y Long Range, the Model X features around 25% parts from Mexico.
The Model 3 isn’t alone at the top, either. The NHTSA figures put the Honda Ridgeline AWD TrailSport, a product of the Honda Alabama Auto Plant (AAP) at the same 75% figure as the Model 3. Still, the standard Ridgeline AWD without the TrailSport package is 70% North American-made, just like the Honda Pilot, Passport, and Odyssey.
