Super Duty driver physically threatens Cybertruck owner
Can’t we all just get along? Apparently not. A Cybertruck owner—a retired public defender in Utah—says a stranger waited for him in a parking lot “with fists balled and violent intentions” to confront him over what he was driving. A liberal angry at Elon Musk’s antics? Perhaps not. This Tesla hater was in a lifted diesel F-350. Tesla owners report this “Cyberbullying” is getting out of hand as they get hate from both sides of the aisle.
The Cybertruck owner, who goes by RM Rilke, had just finished a mountain bike ride. He parked at a trailhead, passed another rider without incident, and went on his way. But when he returned, that same man was waiting.
“As I pulled up, he said, ‘Let me tell you something,’” Rilke wrote on an owners’ forum–according to TorqueNews. The stranger then “just started yelling with pure rage about the truck.”
The confrontation escalated fast. “Then [he] started in on me. Losing his mind. I mean real red-faced anger.” Rilke realized this wasn’t about Elon Musk. “This was in Southern Utah. He was driving a lifted Ford F-350 diesel—not an Elon thing.”
The man came closer, looking ready to fight. “He came at me with his fists balled and violent intentions.”
Luckily, Rilke was prepared. “Having been a public defender for decades, this type of thing is literally just another day at the office for me.” He stayed calm, even trying to defuse the rage. “I felt great pity for this person and his challenges. So much hate and anger. I tried to help him past it with all the love and understanding I could muster.”
Eventually, the man gave up. “He went back to his truck, still furiously screaming. It was very bizarre.” Rilke reflected on the moment: “Cybertruck or no Cybertruck, it’s wild times out there. Feels like a bloody Tinderbox.”
Tesla owners claim “Cyberbullying” is getting out of hand
Rilke isn’t alone. Across the country, Cybertruck owners report a flood of harassment. It’s not just dirty looks—it’s threats, insults, and even dangerous road rage.
“I’ve had a glass bottle thrown at my vehicle,” said Washington D.C. owner Rico Clark–according to the Autopian. Florida driver Marcus Story agreed: “I’ve received late-night hate messages and threats, been flipped off, ‘coal-rolled,’ and had people deliberately slow down in front of me.”
It’s relentless. “We’ve gotten like six flip-offs and some people yelling at us,” said owner Ashley Sarpolis. “We’ve only had it four days, lol.” California driver Gary Lopez has had it worse. “Negative reactions are ten percent of reactions, but I had a range of thumbs down all the way to ‘go k** yourself.’”
Cybertruck owners say the hate doesn’t even come from one political side. “Living in a place with so many progressive people around, I get a lot of hate,” said California Cybertruck owner Hollie Holcombe. “I am also progressive, but some of my friends in this area don’t agree that Tesla is a good company.”
Some just can’t get over the design. “Someone yelled out on a crowded street, ‘That is so ugly!’” said Tina Cyr. Don Turner, an LA-based owner, summed it up: “Thumbs up, thumbs down, middle finger—that’s normal.”
I’ll admit I’m no Cybertruck fan. But fighting folks over their car is ridiculous. As futuristic as the Cybertruck is, it looks like it can’t escape outdated narrow-mindedness.
