Stellantis just patented an ‘EV-driven’ winch
When Stellantis started producing the Wrangler 4xe, the world rejoiced. It is one of the worst-performing plug-in hybrids mileage-wise, but it’s the best-selling PHEV in the nation. And that’s because people really, really like Jeep Wranglers.
Not too long ago, Jeep announced they’d be producing an all-electric Wrangler that’s just as capable, but much more efficient, and green. To add more fuel to the fire (not a gas fire, though), Stellantis’s patent application last year for an EV-driven winch was granted.
The application reads that the winch would be powered by the high-voltage battery and the electric drive motor in EVs. It doesn’t specific which cars the winch is being designed for, either.
That could only mean vehicles other than the Jeep Wrangler could be equipped with the winch. With the Recon EV coming soon, it’s likely we’ll see a trim level with the new winch.
The diagrams reveal a pretty complex design
Instead of needing an on-board compressor or power source to supply power to a winch, Stellantis’s patent reveals the clever way the EV battery controls the winch.
“The EDM features a differential that distributes torque to the front or rear axles in standard driving conditions. However, when switched to winch mode, the system redirects power from the electric motor to a planetary gear set, which then drives the winch spool,” explains Mopar Insiders.
Because it’s built into the high-voltage system, it means the winch retains all of its effectiveness without being obstructive. However, there are also some added gears to help redirect power where it needs to go.
“Another critical innovation is the planetary gear set, which enables power redirection from the electric motor to the winch spool when engaged. This setup ensures that power is efficiently delivered without the need for additional mechanical components, reducing overall system complexity,” the site continued.
Just imagine all the winch-worthy cars!
Since Stellantis owns Ram, Dodge, and Jeep, we’ll likely see the winch fitted to the EV Ram 1500, or maybe even the upcoming Ramcharger. It’s also possible we could see it on a Grand Cherokee, or the all-new Wagoneer S.
Of course, it would be cool to see it on the Wrangler, too. Or if an EV version of the Compass comes out.
