Speeding Pennsylvania truck driver at fault for collision that derailed train
If you think about it, it’s usually the train that hits a car. Trucks, SUVs, and cars get stuck on the tracks or try to beat a train, but can’t. Then bam, the train gets derailed. In this case, a Pennsylvania truck driver hit the train.
Pennsylvania truck driver found at fault for derailing train
Is it opposite day? Instead of a train hitting a truck, a truck hit a train! It hit the train hard too, because it derailed. In this case, a speeding dump truck hit a CSX train at a grade crossing, and chaos ensued.
According to Trains, 43-year-old Bradley Mahan of Johnstown, Pennsylvania was charged by police for driving at an unsafe speed.
The wreck occurred at the designated crossing on Stoystown Road. Mahan clearly failed to observe a train traveling in his direction.
As the truck driver hit the train, two locomotives and four tank cars were sent flying. The tree-axle dump truck also caught fire. Mahan, the train conductor, and the train engineer were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.
The train was carrying four empty tanker cars that were previously filled with vegetable oil during the incident. Leftover residue may have made the situation frustratingly slippery.
Traffic and drivers struggled with the aftermath as the crossing was closed for days. On top of removing train engines and debris, the tracks and road were damaged.
One train engine is still sitting in a yard by the railroad tracks as CXS figures out how to remove it. The engine could weigh between 200 to 400 tons.
