In early January, several areas of Southern California were consumed by several wildfires. While the region is used to fires, high winds increased the burn rate dramatically. The fires killed almost 30 people and destroyed dozens of homes, businesses, and more across 23,000 acres, totaling $53.8 billion in damages.

All 14 fires (yes, you read that right) burned from January 7 to 31, making for weeks of unhealthy air quality in Los Angeles and San Diego County. As of February 16, Los Angeles Daily News reported poor air quality, despite the fires being extinguished.

Soot, ash, and debris from burned homes covered the region, too, putting toxins and particulates in the air. That’s why many Nissan dealerships joined forces to offer residents a free air filter inspection and replacement after the wildfires. If drivers didn’t evacuate, it’s likely their car’s filter drew in soot and ash, potentially clogging it.

“If you or someone you know owns a Nissan or Infiniti vehicle, and you live near the SoCal wildfire areas, your cabin air filter may be clogged with ash and soot,” Dave Kunz, an ABC7 reporter, wrote on Facebook. “Through March 31st, local dealers are offering to replace them for FREE!”

This isn’t the first time Nissan’s done this, either

In 2018, Nissan offered free in-cabin microfilter replacements for drivers. Over 50 dealerships participated in the effort. Dealerships across California were eager to help.

“We are heartbroken by the devastation of these wildfires and want to help those who have been affected in some way,” Kevin Wagstaff, the regional vice president of Nissan North America, was quoted in a company release at the time.

“We can only hope this offer of a free in-cabin microfilter replacement provides some relief as communities begin to rebuild.”

Nissan didn’t list participating dealerships this time around, so if you’re planning on taking your car in for a filter swap, it’d be wise to call your local dealer ahead of time. Not only to make an appointment if they’re participating but also to ensure the parts are in stock.
