A South Carolina Mayor seems like he has been up to no good. He was recently being followed by the police when he caused a car crash that killed two people. But why was he fleeing the cops in the first place?

Apparently, when South Carolina Mayor, George Garner was being followed by the police, he didn’t break any laws. The Mayor of small McColl was being followed by Marlboro County Sheriff’s deputies in an effort to protect his well being.

South Carolina police officers shared that the chase occurred around 2:40 pm on Highway 34 near North Charleston road before turning deadly.

Garner was driving a 2007 Chevy Tahoe when he traveled left to the center of the road and hit a 2003 Volvo semi-truck. He collided with it head-on.

He and the tractor-trailer driver were both injured. They were transported by EMS to the McLeod Regional Medical Center and both succumbed to their injuries.

According to South Carolina Public Radio, a toxicology test was performed. However, it could take six to eight weeks to get the results. Darlington County Coroner, J. Todd Hardee doesn’t believe that toxicology will play into the event.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) spokeswoman, Renee Wunderlich, shared that an investigation into the incident is active and ongoing. However, there is no further information to share at this time.

The plot thickens as the entire police force in McColl recently resigned due to a toxic work environment after citing harassment.

Because the police force resigned, Garner sourced help from the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office, which was providing 24-hour coverage for the town of about 2,000 residents.

McColl struggled with significant police turnover during the past few years. He wanted to work on building trust between the police department and the town council.
