Steve Lazarus worked as an FBI agent for decades and served in the U.S. Air Force. His combined 35 years of service included investigating the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. After retiring, Lazarus wrote a 2023 novel based on a serious, very real death threat he and his family received after a convicted felon was sentenced for planning to attack the Atlanta subway system. The author and veteran shares tips and insights on his social media. This one’s all about gas station safety.

5 crucial gas station safety tips according to a retired FBI veteran

“What’s the number one most dangerous place for a woman?” Lazarus poses to followers. “You’re looking at it.” He’s standing at a local gas station in Yemassee, South Carolina. He says that in 2022, 15% of robberies took place at them. How? They’re the perfect place for criminals to loiter.

“They know you have to get out of your car,” Lazarus explains. “They know your attention is going to be diverted.” He says that gas stations are prime hunting grounds for thieves, carjackers, and predators.

Regardless of gender, here’s how to protect yourself if you need to go fill up:

Avoid “questionable-looking” gas stations off the beaten path

Steer clear of establishments that are rundown, unkempt, and away from populated areas.

Fill up during the day

This one requires some forethought, but avoid letting your tank run low to the point where you have to stop at a gas station after dark.

Before you get out of your car, look around

“Scan the area for anyone who doesn’t look right,” Lazarus instructs. “Like men…hanging out…not pumping gas. If it doesn’t look right, trust your instincts and drive away.”

Spend the least amount of time possible outside your vehicle

A lot of drivers might have been told to avoid opening their car door while fueling up due to static buildup. Still, Lazarus recommends motorists actually get back in their car and lock the door if the scene feels unsafe. “Keep your purse, phone, and any other valuables in sight.”

Plan ahead so you have choices

If you aren’t checking your fuel level regularly and staying aware of the landscape, you might end up feeling forced to get gas somewhere you’d rather not.
