South Carolina police chase ends when SUV hits home and causes a gas leak
Police officers in Columbia, South Carolina sprang into action after receiving reports of people arguing and fighting at the 1600 block of Atascadero Drive. The incident occurred about half a mile away from Trader Joe’s.
When officers arrived they discovered a party at a rental home with juveniles in attendance. While speaking with the tenant, a Nissan Armada sped out of the backyard, nearly hitting pedestrians outside.
A police chase ensued after the Armada as it turned onto Ponte Verder road when the driver turned off the headlights and sped up. Officers attempted a traffic stop as the driver of the SUV lost control and crashed into a home.
A woman was sitting on her porch at the time of the crash, but no one was injured. Seven passengers jumped out of the Armada and ran away on foot.

Then things got worse as officers realized that the SUV hit the home’s gas meter, creating a dangerous leak. According to The State, the Columbia Fire Department, Dominion Energy, and the South Carolina Department of Transportation were called to contain the leak.
Multiple homes in the surrounding area had to be evacuated. Crews quickly dug up the line to turn off the gas. It’s unclear how much gas was released.
Additional police officers and a police dog searched for the people who ran from the SUV. Two adults and a juvenile were found hiding in a creek. They’re still trying to identify the driver as they process the SUV and evidence found inside.
