You may have heard of the “my dog ate my homework,” defense for young students. But you likely haven’t heard of the “a dog ate my Tesla” insurance claim. That’s precisely what one EV owner was left with after a pit bull laid waste to her EV on camera.

If you’re a Tesla owner, you might be a bit worried about vandalism right about now. The brand’s eccentric CEO, Elon Musk, has given the brand a bit of a black eye, and some of the more destructive protestors have taken to damaging Tesla-branded vehicles in response. However, nobody expects a vandal of the canine variety.

An Instagram video with over 400,000 likes shows a pit bull ferociously and inexplicably attacking a Tesla EV. Worse yet, the video is from the perspective of the driver as they sit in the driver’s seat of the electric car. “A pit bull ate my Tesla,” the cameraperson put on the video. That might seem like a bit of an exaggeration, but the pit bull’s determination to damage the EV seemed limitless.

At one point, viewers can see the dog pressing his teeth into the body paneling behind the driver’s side rear doors. At another, the pit bull slides his nose between the open driver-side window and the roofline, like a great white in a shark caging scenario. Moments later, the pit bull has a long section of weather stripping in his maw. He then pulls the weather stripping away from the EV, as if playing tug-o-war with a person.

“I really cannot believe this,” the owner said of the damage. After the dog had his fill of Tesla, the owner took pictures of the damage. The white body paneling shows the impact of hundreds of little bite marks. That, and the pit bull’s massive jaw strength was more than enough to deform the Tesla’s panels.

Needless to say, the commentary on the video reflects the some of the current public resentment for the brand. “Good dog,” one viewer succinctly said. Another made light of the EV’s state after the pit bull’s biting fit. “Okay, but how did the car crumple like that? Dude, Teslas really are made of aluminum foil.”

Another spectator went with a more expertly-crafted insult: “Is the pit bull ok? Eating trash is not safe for dogs.” Either way, very few viewers seemed to put any blame on the dog. Like Chris Kattan said as the title character in “Corky Romano,” “Bad dogs aren’t born, they’re made.” Check out the video of the dog-versus-Tesla event below!
