In case you didn’t hear, General Motors is ramping up its efforts to have an all-electric lineup within a decade. That surprised no one. However, what shocked the industry and prospective buyers was the announcement that GM would not implement phone mirroring apps like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into their vehicles.

Apple announced CarPlay in 2014, and shortly after, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Ferrari revealed cars at the Geneva Auto Show with full versions on the vehicle’s main screen. The idea was simple: with a USB cable, drivers can have a personalized media experience while driving. Their phone contacts, messages, playlists, and GPS data were immediately available.

Most new cars have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto installed in their infotainment screens either wirelessly or with a hard USB connection. Not GM, though.

GM axed it in favor of their in-house tech

General Motors explained that it decided to essentially force customers to use its in-house subscription-based software. Drivers can still connect their phones to the infotainment screen and enjoy a fairly personalized experience, but it no longer includes Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

After almost 10 years of driving cars with those phone mirroring apps making their lives easier, drivers were rightfully upset to see it go.

But, an aftermarket company came to everyone’s rescue by creating a kit that brings the beloved software back into brand-new GM products.

Here’s how the kit works

While all of this sounds (and is) dandy, there is a catch. The company, White Automotive, didn’t announce pricing when speaking to GM Authority. So, for all we know, it could be an investment of over $1,000. White Automotive also indicated it would need to be installed by professionals since the product isn’t plug-and-play like other aftermarket products.

Right now, there’s only one shop authorized to install it. It’s also in Michigan. Right now, the kit fits in new Blazer EVs, the Equinox, Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Cadillac Lyriq.
