High-speed police chases can be incredibly dangerous for everyone on the road. Naturally, this is why many states around the country are taking steps to either limit or ban them outright. Recently, police were trying to pull over a car theft suspect for a traffic stop when the OnStar service stepped in and aided in the process. Now, the driver is facing multiple charges.

Not only did the driver commit car theft, but he also evaded a traffic stop

According to Finger Lakes Daily News, Police in Steuben County, New York, were recently alerted to a car theft that had taken place. Naturally, the caller described the vehicle, so the officers were on the lookout for it. As is often the case, they later spotted the stolen car and then tried to conduct a traffic stop. However, the person behind the wheel refused to pull over and speak to the officers, prompting a high-speed chase.

The report doesn’t say how long the car theft suspect evaded the traffic stop. However, it does say that the man’s speed exceeded 100 miles per hour. Of course, this is a threat to public safety. The officers continued trying to get the man to pull over, but he refused to stop driving at a high rate of speed. Additionally, the report says the man drove on the sidewalk during the chase.

The police officers were then able to make the traffic stop on the car theft suspect when OnStar remotely disabled the vehicle. Naturally, he’s facing multiple charges after the high-speed chase. They include but are not limited to Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, and Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer in the Third Degree. He also has charges for having taken drugs before driving.
