Mechanics are underappreciated. They work with incredibly toxic fluids, aerosols, and regularly maneuver things that are heavy enough to kill them if they fall on them. Thanks to service advisors, they don’t have to directly deal with customers unless they’re trying to diagnose a strange sound. However, when a car rolls into a mechanic’s bay, they never truly know what they’re going to see once they climb in.

Or look under the hood, for that matter. Mechanics at Genuine Automotive & Diesel (@GenuineAutomotiveDieselATX) in Austin, Texas, answered a question that usually provokes a zoned-out look on seasoned mechanics’ faces: “What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen in a customer’s car?”

Keith, who was in the middle of wrenching, laughed nervously before responding, “I can’t say on camera.” The Lord only knows what he saw—but hopefully he’s making enough to pay for therapy.

Seth, who was filing paperwork on a company computer, stared deeply into the void before recalling a customer’s bizarre (and disgusting) eating habits before pulling his car in for service.

“I’ve seen this guy once who had a jar of peanut butter, and he was eating it with a crescent wrench,” he said. “It was… Pretty odd.”

Of course, you wouldn’t be a mechanic if you didn’t deal with deceased animals

Cars happen to be full of things rats love. Cloth, cotton, foam for nests, copper wiring, which are often greased with yummy smelling substances, and they can truly wreak havoc on a car’s electrical system. They also smell terrible, which surprised Zion when a customer didn’t seem bothered by their proximity to him.

“Once I saw multiple rat nests in the cab,” he said. “That’s pretty weird.” Especially since they can be eradicated fairly simply.

Tony was leaning over an engine when he was asked the question, and he answered immediately with a similar recollection, albeit a bit more gruesome than the other mechanics.

“There was a dead raccoon in an old Ford I was working on,” he said. “I had to pull it out, and it was full of maggots and everything.”

Mechanics in the comments recalled their own stories

One viewer said a customer came in with a warning light on the dash, and the reason for it was more alarming.

“Their ABS light was on, and I found a full 9mm clip under the seat, tugging on wires,” they wrote.

Someone wrote that they discovered their business partner had a customer with some very illegal habits they forgot to cover up.

“I found a dime bag full of blow in the headliner of a rental while doing some PDR work on the roof,” they recalled.

Another wrote that a customer was more freaked out by the surprise hiding in the glovebox than they were.

“I found poopy underwear covering the wheel lock in the glove box, and the poor dude was totally freaking out, he forgot about them,” their comment read.
