Elderly man pulled over and fined for driving despite 92-year license ban
A Facebook post from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command in Australia has gone viral after what they thought was going to be a routine stop. A 72-year-old man in an early 1990s Subaru was pulled over as part of a Random Breath Test to surprise and catch drunk drivers. Eyebrows were raised when they checked for a license.
He wasn’t drunk, but there were other reasons the old man shouldn’t have been on the road. Several years back, his license was revoked by a judge for a whopping 92 years. Police noted his license couldn’t be reinstated for many years to come.
“Upon speaking with the driver, they have recognised the driver as a long-term disqualified driver. Checks were conducted, which revealed the driver was disqualified from driving until 2117,” the post read.
He went from behind the wheel to behind bars
Police never indicated what the man’s previous offenses were, but it must have been fairly severe if he was banned from driving for almost a century.
The post went on to say he was obviously arrested, with my more years added to his life-long driving ban.
“The driver was arrested, he was taken to Bathurst Police Station and charged with driving [with a suspended license],” the post continued. “Bail was refused, and he is to appear before Bathurst Local Court on 10/03/2025. Additionally, the driver was issued a number plate confiscation notice for driving a motor vehicle during the disqualification period.”
Aussie viewers have a very crude sense of humor about the license ban
The department’s post earned almost 800 reactions and 250 comments. One hundred people have shared it, too.
Of course, people couldn’t skip the opportunity to make a joke about the length of time the driver had to go before they could get their license back.
“Disqualified until 2117… He was only a couple days off from getting his license back!” they wrote.
Another made an excellent point about the sentence.
“He already suspended well until 2117, where he will allegedly be 165 years old in the future,” the viewer pointed out. “So, he has nothing to lose by continuing to drive “unlawfully.” Only fines would be a deterrent perse, but I will bet even then he would not pay them.”
