Rideshare platforms have changed the way people get around. However, the ability to summon a car to take you across town doesn’t give you the power to break the rules. As such, your Lyft or Uber driver may kick you out for a litany of reasons, most of which are safety concerns.

Your Uber driver or Lyft driver can kick you out of their car for the right reasons

Just because your Uber driver picked you up doesn’t mean they can’t terminate the ride for the right reasons.

  • Visible intoxication
  • Use of drugs/alcohol in the vehicle
  • Behaving in a threatening manner
  • Harassment
  • Violating the rules/regulations of rideshare

Uber’s website details some reasons for ride termination on its community guidelines page. Regarding drugs and alcohol, the rideshare giant says, “If a rider is too drunk or rowdy, you have the right to decline the trip for their own safety.”

While it doesn’t go into detail regarding what constitutes intoxication, it does prohibit drivers and riders from the use of drugs and alcohol while using the platform. “Drug use and open containers of alcohol are never allowed while using the Uber Marketplace Platform.”

Beyond substances, a driver can terminate the ride and eject you from the vehicle if you behave in a threatening manner. Everyone wants to feel safe in a rideshare, drivers included. The same goes for harassment. “Aggressive, confrontational, and harassing behavior is not allowed. Don’t use language or make gestures that could be disrespectful, discriminatory, threatening, or inappropriate.”

Finally, it’s understandable that violating any of Uber or Lyft’s explicit rules and regulations can land you on the curb. For instance, both rideshare entities prohibit drivers and riders from carrying a firearm while using the platform. As such, if you get into a rideshare vehicle and a driver notices your open carry or concealed firearm, they might kick you out on the spot.
