For many drivers, Apple CarPlay is one of the most important features when searching for the best cars to buy. Like Android Auto, it makes it easier for people to interact with their phones while giving their full attention to the road and their surroundings. However, GM has been planning to get rid of the feature in some of its cars for a while now. Recently, a senior-level staff member gave a non answer for why the automotive giant is doing this.

May GM cars won’t come with Apple car play

Many people looking for the best cars to buy will undoubtedly consider GM options. After all, General Motors is the parent company for some of the largest car brands. However, those who value Apple CarPlay may be thinking twice about this decision. Recently, GM’s Senior Vice President, Baris Cetinok, visited The Verge’s Decoder podcast and talked about the company’s decision to get rid of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

According to Baris, “We are best positioned as well as we owe it to our customers firsthand to create the most deeply integrated experience that we can create with the vehicle. We’re building beautifully designed, complete thoughts, complete convictions.”

He continues about GM cars and CarPlay, “We say this car is designed to do the following things awesomely. This is Silverado. This is what it stands for; this is what it does. It’s hard to get into a car and go, ‘Okay, so I’m doing highway trailering, but to pick my podcast, I have to flip to a totally different user interface, flip back to trailering, now I can also do SuperCruse trailering, let me manage that and then wait, we’re now getting into potentially level 3 level 4 autonomy levels that should be deeply integrated with talking to the map, where the lanes lie, but wait a minute the map that I’m using doesn’t really talk to my car.'”

Mixed signals regarding reasons

Regarding GM cars no longer having CarPlay moving forward, he then says the company simply needed to make the bold decision to “burn the bridge.” He also says they are working on an “optimized” experience for GM cars. Despite this bold plan, many buyers say they would not buy a vehicle without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Some comments on the above video also expressed distrust in GM to build the platform. Of course, some think they made this call in order to create a new subscription.

Of course, some have accused GM of giving mixed signals regarding its cars’ use of Apple CarPlay. This is the case because the company initially blamed safety for getting rid of this popular technology. Notably, the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EVs were the first GM cars to ditch the platform.
