Ford Mustang Mach-E sales are embarrassing its namesake
The Ford Mustang lives alone in the muscle car segment for 2025. Gone is the larger-than-life Dodge Challenger. So too is the Chevrolet Camaro and its tire-vaporizing ZL1 trims. However, the Mustang’s lone presence in the category isn’t enough to keep the pony car ahead of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the divisive EV SUV with the same Mustang moniker.
Ford Mustang Mach-E record sales in 2024 put the high-voltage SUV ahead of the beloved Blue Oval pony car by over 7,000 units
The Blue Oval sold nearly 52,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E EVs in 2024. It’s a staggering 29.6% increase over the sales figures from 2023. However, it’s another bragging right for the fully electric SUV: it means the Mach-E outsold the all-too-familiar ICE Mustang.
According to the sales figures, Ford sold 48,605 two-door, gas-powered Mustangs in 2023. However, 2024 was less kind to the pony car. Car buyers took home around 4,602 fewer Mustangs last year than in 2023, a decrease of nearly 10%.
| Make and model | 2024 sales (US) | 2023 sales (US) |
|---|---|---|
| Ford Mustang Mach-E | 51,745 units | 40,771 units |
| Ford Mustang | 44,003 units | 48,605 units |
Ford partially credits the new “Ford Power Promise” program with the Ford Mustang Mach-E sales successes, per Fox Business. The program offers gratis home charging architecture. Installation is also free of charge, along with customer support.
Either way, it’s a surprise to see the two-door, rear-wheel drive (RWD) Mustang upstaged. After its release in 1964, Ford sold over 418,000 Mustangs in its first year of production. When the Chevrolet Camaro rolled off the line in 1967, Ford sold over twice as many Mustangs as Chevrolet did Camaros.
With left and right-hand-drive models available worldwide, Ford asserts that the Mustang has been the best-selling sports car in the world for a decade. Still not enough to dethrone its electrified sibling.
