‘We’ll be back’ Ford Mustang GTD isn’t finished thrashing the Nürburgring
The Ford Mustang GTD recently set a wild record. Most notably, the GTD is the first production American car to smash the coveted seven-minute lap time benchmark at the storied Nürburgring. However, Ford CEO Jim Farley says the record-breaking Mustang model isn’t finished with the “Green Hell” quite yet.
Ford CEO Jim Farley says the Ford Mustang GTD will return to the Nürburgring, despite its already-historic lap time
The Ford Mustang GTD looks like a Mustang. It also sounds something like a Mustang, given its supercharged 5.2L V8. However, that’s about where the family resemblance ends. Unlike the Mustang GT or the Dark Horse, the GTD is a road-going race car. It’s stiff, light, and with 815 horsepower on tap, it’s the most powerful production Ford Mustang ever.
With credentials like that, scores of car enthusiasts were excited to hear that the manic Mustang would take on the Nürburgring. Now, the Nürburgring Nordschleife serves as something of a proving ground for automakers and tuners. Every year, performance-hungry entities descend on the track, hoping to smash expectations and records. As for the Ford Mustang GTD, Ford CEO Jim Farley and the Ford Performance had a pretty serious goal: break the seven-minute threshold.

And it did. With an official Nürburgring lap time of 6:57.685, the Ford Mustang GTD outran the ballistic 992.1 Porsche 911 GT3 around the iconic track by more than two seconds. However, it also established itself as the fastest American production car ever to lap the German racing circuit.
Still, The Blue Oval is suggesting that the Mustang GTD isn’t finished with the Nürburgring. In a “Terminator” adjacent statement, Ford CEO Jim Farley said, “We’ll be back.” The team at Ford Performance believes the Mustang GTD can do more on the track.
In the meantime, the Ford Mustang GTD and its driver, Dirk Müller, accomplished their goals and more. Only time will tell whether the Ford Mustang GTD can push the envelope even further at the Nürburgring.
