First dates are always a gamble. They can end up wonderful or awkward. But one UK woman’s first date with a BMW driver ended up being downright dangerous, when she was dragged along on a high speed police chase.

The unnamed woman may have thought her date was a real catch, at first. Mazyar Azarbonyad is a 20-year-old from County Durham, England. He works as a personal trainer and picker her up in a blacked-out BMW sedan.

The two of them hung out until after 2 AM on a Tuesday. But finally, she had to go home. While Azarbonyad was driving through the village of Swalwell, police car began to follow him. Then it fired up its lights, signaling him to pull over.

The BMW driver made a fateful decision for him and his date

Azarbonyad had a tail light out. But he didn’t know that’s why he was being pulled over. He might have thought he was in trouble for driving without a license, or driving without insurance. His date may have thought the law had somehow caught wind of the marijuana she was carrying. Azarbonyad made a decision that would change both of their lives: he floored it and tried to outrun the police.

The BMW driver sped onto the A1 highway. The police officer called backup, and soon multiple cars were on Azarbonyad’s tail. One unmarked Volvo police cruiser hit 135 mph while trying to catch up to the chase.

According to People Magazine, Azarbonyad appeared to have surrendered. He slowed down and had almost come to a complete stop. He was surrounded by at least four marked police cars. At that moment, the unmarked Volvo caught up with them, smashing into Azarbonyad and the other police cars.

The impact crumpled the rear end of Azarbonyad’s BMW. It tore the roof and doors off one of the police cars. Seven police officers were transported to the hospital. None of their injuries were described as life-threatening. The debris strewn across the highway took so long to clean up, authorities kept the A1 closed for 12 hours.

After the brutal police chase crash, officers took the BMW driver into custody. During questioning, Azarbonyad admitted his decision to drive away had been “s—.” Authorities told him he could post bail, but absolutely no more driving until his hearing and sentencing.

Police also arrested the unnamed 20-something woman on suspicion of aiding and abetting dangerous driving. But she was released on bail and her only pending chargers are drug possession.

Days later, police noticed Azarbonyad at a gas station, filling up another car. When questioned, he admitted to driving a red Hyundai i10 at least four times since his arrest. He claimed he’d been going to work at his gym in downtown Newcastle. He still had no license or insurance.

Prosecutor Simon Worthy didn’t mince words. “One would have thought as a matter of common sense that having been involved in something of this seriousness, plastered all over the press, the TV, the newspapers, online, that you would have been a bit more sensible about your activities, having been so lucky to get out of an accident only two days before. But no, no, you continue to stick two fingers up.”
