Driving while under the influence is one of the most dangerous things a person can do. It causes a large volume of car wrecks each year. This reckless action also causes consequences for the person behind the wheel. This is evident in a recent story where a guy got a DUI charge and now has to spend 15 years behind bars after multiple innocent bystanders lost their lives.

Driving while under the influence leads to more than just a  DUI charge

According to The United States Attorney General’s office, a 37-year-old man admitted to driving under the influence on August 7, 2022, while using his cell phone. Notably, he was also driving 116 miles per hour when he crashed into another vehicle. The other vehicle involved in the wreck veered off the road and then rolled over. Sadly, all three people, including two men and one female, passed away as a result of the crash.

Things worsened as the man who had been driving while under the influence fled the scene of the crash on foot. He was to remain in custody until sentencing, which has just recently happened. Now, he has 15 years in prison due to the DUI charge and the multiple deaths associated. Following the 15-year sentence, he will have five years of supervised release. This includes alcohol and substance abuse monitoring as well as mental health programs.

Of course, driving a vehicle while under the influence is bad enough, but doing so while driving 116 mph and using a cell phone is truly egregious. Remember, there is never a reason to drive after drinking, and all cell phone notifications can wait until you’re parked.
