There are several reasons why a person could be pulled over for a police traffic stop. One of the most common happens to be having decided to drive while under the influence, which is a crime that causes several fatal car wrecks each year. Currently, one man in Indiana is facing a DUI charge after leaving the road and falling asleep behind the wheel.

The decision to drive while under the influence is never a good one

The typical idea of a traffic stop involves drivers being pulled over by the police. However, some of these interactions happen when the driver has already stopped the car. According to 14 News, someone called the Evansville police to the Fendrich Golf Course on the night of March 7th. Specifically, this happened around 8:30. Once on the scene, they spotted a man passed out behind the wheel with the engine off.

As the traffic stop continued, the officers were able to wake the man, who they later learned was 75. They asked if he was aware that his car had left the highway, to which he replied, “I was.” He then informed them that he had attempted to exit the expressway. Naturally, they were already suspecting that he had decided to drive while under the influence. They began field sobriety testing, which the man was too intoxicated to handle on his own. Notably, he couldn’t stand without assistance.

Following the traffic stop and testing, the police determined that the man who had driven while under the influence had a BAC of .189. This is more than twice the legal limit. They took him to the Vanderburgh County jail and handed him a DUI charge. It’s unclear if the man has made bail.
