Earlier this month, police sniffed out a now-viral video of two drivers—one in a Lamborghini convertible and the other in a Tesla Cybertruck—racing on a public road. The visible license plates, broad daylight, and high speeds captured in high-definition helped generate millions of views.

The video, originally posted on X, currently has four million views. After Musk reposted the video to his profile, the view count skyrocketed to 146.7 million views. Of course, he used the opportunity to praise the Cybertruck.

“Cybertruck can beat a Porsche 911 while towing a Porsche 911!” wrote Musk.

30 seconds of fame could mean a year in jail

Officials of Virginia’s Fairfax County have been passing laws and ordinances left and right to combat illegal street racing to protect pedestrians. After someone posted the video and the public took notice, it only took a few days for police to locate, arrest, and charge both drivers.

The Fairfax County Police reposted the racing footage to its own profile to use the “racers” as examples. In Fairfax, a ticket for illegal street racing is classified as a Class 1 misdemeanor. Depending on the severity and whether or not anyone was hurt while racing, the court could impose one year behind bars with a $2,500 fine.

The county may also revoke a driver’s license for up to two years, add six points to a license, and even impound and seize the vehicle.

“Fast cars + poor judgment = fines & charges,” the PD’s account wrote. At the end of the video, the police released body cam footage of both drivers being arrested and placed in the back of a squad car.

In the comments section, the PD’s account asked viewers for help to find the person standing in the middle of the street to flag the racers forward. At the time of publication, the “flagger” has yet to be located and fined.

Surprisingly, viewers were supportive of the arrests

Despite Musk’s pat on the back to the Cybertruck driver, many viewers were excited to see both drivers booked.

One X user praised the police work but asked detectives to shift their focus to other dangerous drivers.

“Go FCPD! Now can you please go after the slow drivers in the left lane?” they wrote, earning 14 likes.

Another user wrote they wanted to see the drivers lose their wheels and future driving privileges.

“I hope they get their licenses suspended and confiscate those cars,” reads the comment.

Another hopes the attention gathered by the police department’s posts serve as a wakeup call to others who think racing outside of a track is smart.

“Good! I hope this will deter these idiots from doing it again. But, they have no comment sense, so I doubt it,” they wrote.
