Cowboy ropes bicycle thief in Walmart parking lot
A cowboy in Eagle Point, Oregon, roped something out of the ordinary a few years back. Robert Borba, a 28-year-old ranch hand and champion bull rider, stopped by Walmart to grab some dog food. As he walked out, he heard a woman screaming for help.
“Stop him! He stole my bike!” she yelled.
Borba looked up just in time to see a man pedaling away. With no time to chase him on foot, Borba did what immediately came to mind. He sprinted to his truck, pulled out his horse, “Old Grey,” and took off after the thief.
With a few swings of his lasso, Borba snagged the suspect by the ankle. The stunned suspect hit the pavement, tangled in rope.
“What are you doing, man? You got a badge?” the thief asked.
“No, I ain’t got a badge,” Borba replied.
The cowboy called 911 himself, CBS News said back in 2016, the year of the incident. The dispatcher was skeptical when Borba explained how he had the man detained.
“We got a guy who just stole a bike here at Walmart. I got him roped and tied to a tree.”
“What?!” the operator responded.
Eagle Point police officer Chris Adams arrived minutes later to an unusual sight. The suspect was on the ground, roped up like cattle, with Borba holding the other end from horseback.
“I’d take him by my side any day,” Adams said, impressed by the cowboy’s quick thinking.
Borba wasn’t looking for attention or a reward. He just saw someone in trouble and acted. When the police finished their job, all the cowboy wanted was his rope back.
The event happened almost nine years ago. I came across the story on social media this week, where a new reel highlighting the cowboy’s actions shared different witness interviews and photos. The reel has over 100,000 likes and refers to Red Dead Redemption, the popular immersive Western action-adventure game. One witness described Borba’s actions as rodeo-like perfection.
