The topic of catalytic converter theft is a big one in the automotive industry because this form of car theft can be quite lucrative and easy for criminals. It’s one of the most widespread crimes involving vehicles. Recently, one man in California was convicted of this crime, and now he’s facing up to ten years in prison and a hefty fine.

Catalytic converter theft impacts cars and drivers all over the world

According to Action News 30, a jury convicted George Thomas, 72, of running a massive catalytic converter theft ring. In total, he made more than $2.7 million. The report says that he worked with a group of thieves between January 2021 and November 2022. Essentially, he gave the subordinates specific instructions on the types of converters he wanted and how to steal them from vehicles. Additionally, he loaned them money for items they needed to conduct the thefts, such as saws.

The catalytic converter thefts happened in Fresno, California. However, they were then transported to Oregon, where Thomas sold them. Authorities arrested George Thomas in 2023, and instances of converter theft decreased by about 60 percent in the area, which is pretty telling. Now that he has been found guilty, the sentencing is scheduled for September 11th of this year.

Naturally, catalytic converter theft is a massive issue for drivers, which means the man faces a hefty sentence. He could be in prison for up to 10 years and fined $250,000. It’s unclear if the authorities have located any of his accomplices who helped steal the catalytic converters from cars.
