Nowadays, most of the best new cars to buy come with an infotainment system. This feature comes in handy for several reasons, but most notably, it serves as a way to control various aspects of the vehicle. However, the touchscreen in a car can also stop working, which puts drivers in a bind in several ways. Luckily, there are ways to fix it without breaking the bank. This is even the case if there isn’t a car recall.

Reach out to the automaker to fix a broken car touchscreen

One of the easiest ways to get a car touchscreen fixed is if there is an active recall. However, this won’t usually be the case. Still, car owners can contact the automakers behind their vehicles for aid in getting this all-important feature fixed. As an example, my screen went out in my 2018 Jeep Renegade, and after a while, I decided to contact Stellantis.

After I contacted them about the touchscreen in my car, they informed me that they could have it fixed for me. However, I would need to go to a certified dealer and have them run a diagnostic on the vehicle. Readers should note that they weren’t going to pay for the diagnostic. Still, had I used this method, it would have been less expensive than replacing the full unit myself.

Of course, there is no guarantee all automakers will do this with the infotainment system, but my experience shows that it is possible.

Replace only the screen

Only the display was impacted when my car’s touchscreen went out. I could still press buttons, but I had no idea what I was pressing. Of course, this let me know it was the screen, not the entire system. So, I fixed the issue by buying a screen that worked from my car from Amazon and simply having it replaced. In the end, I spent well under $100, which fixed an issue I had been dealing with for years.

Aftermarket or used parts

Of course, there are some known issues with buying aftermarket or used parts. This is especially the case for a car touchscreen. However, it is a solution, especially if the problem is more than the screen. Going with an aftermarket or a used infotainment system can save car owners a ton of money. Of course, there are still labor costs for installation, but many people may find this to be worth it.

Still, I believe the first two options are better. I succeeded in only replacing the screen with an Amazon replacement, but others may need more extensive repairs. Of course, owners can check for an active car recall on the NHTSA website.
