When big trucks crash, the situation is typically already disastrous. However, when the result of a truck crash sets venomous snakes free, then it creates a whole new level of chaos. Over two dozen snakes in an RV tasted freedom after the vehicle was hit by a box truck.

A box truck hits an RV field with snakes

It’s unclear why a recreational vehicle was traveling from South Carolina to Pennsylvania with dozens of venomous snakes, but the story only gets weird from here.

The RV was carrying five people, 28 snakes, two tortoises, five bearded dragons, and one cat. It was also towing a Jeep Cherokee when chaos ensued.

A box truck hit the Jeep Cherokee and crushed it before ramming into the back of the RV. Then the snakes got loose. One of the snakes was a small, highly venomous viper.

The snakes were collected off the pavement before EMS workers arrived, and all of the animals survived. No one in the RV was hurt, including one son who was asleep in the Cherokee and was forced through the rear bedroom.

According to WRAL, police officers believe that the driver of the box truck fell asleep at the wheel before the collision.

Unfortunately, he suffered serious injuries and was transported to the WakeMed in Raleigh. It’s currently unclear what charges he will face.

A North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper shared that in 19 years with the force he’s never seen anything like this.

The wreck occurred just past midnight on Interstate 95 near North Springfield School Road. The family was lucky to recover each of the snakes in the dark conditions.

Hopefully, the family and the collection of pets made it to safety after the wreck. I don’t think local hotels would be happy to house the entire traveling zoo.
