Biden’s $3B USPS mail truck EV deal could be derailed by DOGE
The United States Postal Service was on track to go fully electric. However, for some carriers, the dream of having an electric USPS mail truck could be over. DOGE thinks the deal is too expensive and slow to continue with.
DOGE may cancel the $3B USPS mail truck EV deal
Under former President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, $3 billion was allocated to update the USPS mail truck by going electric. The plan was to create a fully electric fleet.
However, DOGE is coming in with chainsaws to cut this deal apart. It introduced a bill to take the billions back. It’s the “Return to Sender” Act and it seeks to reclaim about 30% of the overall appropriation that was intended to reduce inflation.
According to Fox News, one issue is that the EV trucks are being built too slowly. A South Carolina manufacturer was supposed to build 60,000 vehicles.
In November, it was already way behind schedule. The USPS has only received under 100 electric trucks. The USPS was contracted to receive 50,000 electric delivery trucks over the next three years and has 93 so far.
Then the Biden Administration agreed to pay more for each truck as prices increased. They agreed to pay $77,692 per truck for roughly 28,000 vehicles.
DOGE believes Biden funneled billions into this failed USPS mail truck EV project. It has delivered nothing but delays, defective trucks, and skyrocketing costs.
Either way, the USPS is in dire need of modern trucks. The model you’re used to seeing came out in 1987 and was supposed to only be used for 12 to 20 years. Now they’ve been in use for over 30 years.
