The days of the charming little van are long gone. At least car buyers thought so. Now, Volkswagen is capitalizing on the cuter-than-hell aesthetic of yesteryear’s microbus favorites. It’s the 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz, a nostalgic cocktail of two-tone retro looks and modern EV architecture.

The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz is on a solo mission to inject some life into the sober minivan segment

A trip through photo albums from the 1960s is sure to reveal a few constants. You’re almost certain to see the old-school cool fashions of the time. You’ll likely see driveway projects to keep muscle cars and now-classics streetworthy. However, you’ll also almost certainly get a glimpse of a Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus, one of the oft-referenced “VW Buses” of the day.

Fast forward to 2025, and Volkswagen is taking a stab at retro appeal in the van segment akin to its now-discontinued Beetle revival. To accomplish its monumental task, the German automaker revealed the 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz. For starters, the ID. Buzz works in specific style nods to the Volkswagen Buses of decades past, including smile-inducing eight two-tone paint options, big windows, and lines that evoke retro vans of the past.

However, even with cute at every corner, the 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz works as a minivan. With flat surfaces from front to rear, the ID. Buzz is a welcomed recipient of cargo. Also, with three rows and folding seats, the ID. Buzz will haul a family or furniture. And don’t think of diminutive proportions like the classic VW Bus; the ID. Buzz outstretches the classic model by nearly 27 inches. In terms of width, the new EV adds a little over 10 inches.

Of course, unlike the comparably anemic air-cooled ICE VW Bus, the ID. Buzz is a through-and-through battery electric vehicle (BEV) on the VW Group’s MEB platform. Humorously, if pit the two against each other from a stoplight, the ID. Buzz driver will have the time to unload cargo at the end of a sprint to 60 mph. Volkswagen claims the ID. Buzz will hit 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds.

However, drivers won’t get Tesla Model Y Long Range distances from the MEB-powered ID. Buzz. Volkswagen says the 2025 ID. Buzz will cover up to 234 miles on a single charge. It’s unlikely to match that figure in anything other than ideal conditions, though.
