Remember that Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX recall from December? The one about replacing faulty engines? Well the time for these trucks and SUVs to finally get new engines is here and the process will be expensive and painfully slow. 

Over 100,000 Toyota Tundra engines are being replaced 

While 2022 – 2023 Toyota Tundra trucks and Lexus LX models were being produced, debris may have accidentally been left in the engines. 

Small chips of metal could be in roughly 102,292 twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 engines. The debris could contaminate the engine oil, lead to severe internal damage, and cause the engine to seize. 

Toyota issued a recall related to this problem in December, 2023. However, they didn’t have a plan to replace each engine until now. 

Replacing each engine will cost between $300 to $500 million and Toyota dealerships are being prepped to take on the work. 

Each replacement will take 13 to 21 hours to complete. Plus, dealerships must carefully manage the workflow to allow service bays to keep regular hours for other warranty and customer work. 

Current owners at risk can expect a long wait. The faster you get in line, the better. People can begin scheduling engine replacements in late November or early December. 

On top of that, the right loaner cars must be available. Someone who needs a Tundra for work won’t exactly be happy with a Toyota Camry. 

This is Toyota’s biggest and most expensive recall in history. Toyota is supplying complete engine assemblies with turbochargers, pulleys, tensioners, and other components. 

Technicians will have to remove the hood to access the engine bay. Next, they will drain fluids and disconnect ancillary parts, Then they will unbolt the engine from the transmission and engine mounts. 

The defective engines will be returned to Toyota. It’s unclear how they will be used, but some components can be recycled to lower costs.
