1 American-made truck faces surprisingly weak sales against rivals
It’s easy to assume that an American-made truck would have better sales compared to rivals. However, the best-selling full-size trucks are actually built in other countries. Options like the Ford F-150 soar past the Toyota Tundra.
One American-made truck struggles behind the pack with low sales
According to CarBuzz, the Toyota Tundra is struggling to keep up with options from American brands, like Ford, Chevrolet, and Ram.
The Tundra sold about 159,528 units in 2024, which is pretty low. The Ford F-150 sold 765,649 models, the Chevy Silverado sold 560,264 trucks, and the Ram 1500 sold 373,120 units.
So, the Tundra fell behind the third best-selling truck by about 214,592 models despite being one of the most American-made trucks.
Data from the American-Made Index (AMI) shows that the Tundra is the most American-made full-size truck available. It’s followed by the Ram 1500, the F-150 Lightning, the gas-powered F-150, the F-150 Hybrid, and the Silverado 1500.
The AMI ranks vehicles on a 100-point scale based on location(s) of final assembly, percentage of United States and Canadian parts, countries of origin for available engines, countries of origin for available transmissions, and United States manufacturing workforce.

For decades, the Tundra has been manufactured in San Antonio. While the Ford F-150 is linked to manufacturing plants in Michigan, Missouri, and Kansas, it has ties to Mexico and Venezuela. Only about 30% of parts for the F-150 come from America.
Buying American-made trucks might not matter as much to drivers as you think. The F-150 continues to be the best-selling truck for the 47th year in a row.
The Tundra could be facing weak sales because of its higher price tag. Critics claim it’s falling behind due to dated tech making it less advanced compared to rivals. Also, it only has two engines available, making it limited against its competition.
